EDGE AVOIDING ROBOT
An edge avoidance robot is one which is capable of changing its path once it reaches the edge of a platform to avoid accidental tripping over. This technique has a good potential for practical applications ranging from toys for children to wheelchairs for the physically challenged or delicate instrument platforms in earthquake prone zones through suitable modifications.
In this demonstration model we are using two infrared sensors to sense the distance between the foreground and the robot base. I believe an ultrasonic sensor can also be employed for the purpose if it suits one's necessity.
The programming is done in a manner that the robot will move in a straight path once turned on; in case of detection of a sudden depression, the robot will back down for a moment, change its path and continue until another similar situation arise.
The following video will demonstrate the above theoretical concept:-
